Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School

Quay Smathers of Canton, NC, received the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award for his tireless efforts to keep the Blue Ridge style of shaped-note singing alive. He taught singing schools from Georgia to Michigan and points in between, one of them being Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC. The WWC singing schools were open to college students and community alike, and attracted a large class each year they were held. Following are recordings from some of the schools. The Quay Smathers Memorial Singing School endeavors to teach shaped-note singing in a way that would make Quay proud. For more information go to qssingingschool.org
